Who We Are
Inspired by Ruth Friedberg, the Art Song Center for Poets and Musicians was originally formed in San Antonio, Texas in 2019. Since that time it has expanded its scope to many areas throughout Texas. We believe that Art Song with its focus on poetry and musical interpretation allows the performer and listener to be present in the moment and experience that moment as soothing to the soul, as healing, and as therapeutic. This is a way for people to be connected through music and poetry. By expanding the scope of the musical genres represented, The Art Song Center for Poets and Musicians strives to provide a musical journey and experience at each presentation. It is a way to provide a human connection to music through more than just a concert or lecture. The Art Song Center continues to expand its types of offerings to achieve our goals of being inclusive and accessible as well as inspiring and education.

Dr. Cheryl Cellon Lindquist is an American pianist, collaborator, coach, and conductor. Renowned as a collaborative artist and soloist, Dr. Lindquist had performed with an array of singers, instrumentalists, choirs, chamber ensembles, and symphony orchestras throughout the United States and Europe. She maintains a private vocal coaching studio that includes numerous opera singers with both professional companies and apprentice program, university faculty and students, chamber musicians, and amateurs. Known for her versatility across a variety of musical styles and sensitive artistry, she has been called an "excellent collaborator" and an "outstanding soloist with intricate passagework." To promote and revitalize the importance of Art Song, Dr. Lindquist co-founded the Art Song Center in 2019 with pianist, scholar and author, Ruth C. Friedberg. As an advocate for music of living composers, she is also an original founding member of the new music repertory group, CMASH, and collaborates frequently with co-founder and Artistic Director, Ann Moss. As a champion of new music, she has worked with composers Jake Heggie, John Harbison, Tobias Picker, and Michael Ching. Dr. Lindquist has a versatile career and she enjoys every aspect from performing to coaching, directing and conducting.

Over the past 200 years, great ages of poetry have been followed by great ages of Art Song composition. Our goal is to keep this literature alive and to inspire its continued creation while opening up the presentations to new and varied genres of music. We want to elevate the song recital and to inspire further listening and studying of the rich heritage of poetry and melody of song while opening up the understanding of song to new and exciting interpretations.

Our ability to focus on performing skills, repertoire introduction, and song interpretation is suited to all levels of performer whether professional or amateur. Opportunities available include reading sessions of art song literature, educational sessions and performances featuring composers, poets and performers with emphasis on the poetic text and the interpretation of the song.
